In a locomotive, the DB (Dynamic Braking) Contactor is a high-capacity electromechanical switch specifically designed to engage the braking resistors. When activated, it redirects the electricity generated by the traction motors—acting as generators during deceleration—into these resistor grids to dissipate energy as heat. This process provides powerful, non-mechanical braking force, which reduces wear on the air brake shoes and prevents wheel overheating on long downgrades. Due to the massive currents involved, DB contactors are built with heavy-duty contacts and robust arc chutes to safely manage the intense electrical arcs created during switching.
